W3C Semantic Web Interest Group (SWIG) Meeting

The W3C SWIG group will be meeting as part of W3C's All Groups (technical plenary and advisory committee) meeting, which runs 20-24th that week.

Status: this is a near-final agenda. We intentionally have open slots in the agenda, please mail danbri/ivan (ideally Cc: semantic-web@w3.org) if you would like agenda time for some topic, or a (short!) talk / presentation. Preference will be given to discussion over formal presentations, and we'll use some of our time each day (roughly barcamp-style) to allocate unassigned timeslots. Please do not edit the actual agenda text here without syncing with Dan (and cc: Ivan). Short talk proposals, or offers to lead themed discussion, all welcomed.

Logistics

Background

The Semantic Web Interest Group is a continuation of the original RDF IG, established in 1999 to help connect W3C's metadata and Semantic Web technology with a wider user community. The SWIG operates largely through mailing lists, but participants also make active use of IRC, blogs and occasional real life meetings too. More information on the SWIG is available from the group homepage at http://www.w3.org/20001/sw/interst/

The Technical Plenary Week continues after the SW IG meeting (mon/tues), with a wednesday plenary session, followed by further meetings of W3C groups (including its Advisory Committee) on thur/fri.

Note that there is a Semantic Web Best Practices WG meeting planned for thursday and friday of TP week. Both meetings are likely to address the relationship between BPD WG and SW IG. In brief, the two groups have related goals, but differing membership models and work styles. The SW IG is designed to complement the work of W3C's Semantic Web Working Groups through providing a broader public forum for collaboration and discussion. The BPD WG meeting is intended primarily for WG members, although observers may be allowed (see meeting page for details).

The TPAC All Groups meeting provides an opportunity for cross-communication with other W3C groups. Amongst those closest to the SWIG are:

  • Semantic Web Health Care and Life Sciences IG (SWHCLS) (also meeting mon/tues)
  • OWL Working Group (meeting thurs/friday)
  • Rule Interchange Format (RIF) Working Group (meeting thurs/friday)

Agenda

We have two days. Previous SWIG meetings have combined various elements:

  • status/update re W3C specs and groups
  • implementor reports and feedback from application developers
  • lightning talks and round-table discussion
  • specific collaborations between W3C SW groups

The basic TPAC template for monday and tuesday is that we can meet from 08:30-18:00 with breaks as follows:

  • 10:30-11:30 Refreshment Break (To allow for flexibility in group meeting schedules, food and beverages will be available for one hour, and groups are welcome to take their break at any point during this time.)
  • 12:00-14:00 Lunch - Restaurant le Féréol Lunch will be in two shifts:
  • 12-1pm and 1-2pm (Meeting Planners will coordinate w/ Group Chairs.)
  • 15:00-16:00 Refreshment Break (To allow for flexibility in group meeting schedules, food and beverages will be available for one hour, and groups are welcome to take their break at any point during this time.)

SWIG normally takes long coffee and lunch breaks. We are an Interest Group, not a deadline-pressured Working Group. Hallway conversations and small-group discussions are one of the most important reasons for attendance.

Unassigned time in the agenda is flagged TECHNICAL or NONTECHNICAL to help novices avoid detailed discussion of technical obscurities, while allowing experts to make the most of the chance to meet.

Monday Oct 20th:

  • 8:45 for 9:00 Welcome and introductions (danbri)
  • 9.30 W3C Update: Current and Future W3C SemWeb Work - short talk and roundtable discussion (danbri w/ ivan handling questions :)
  • 10.00 Agenda-hacking session - solicit small group breakouts, late-breaking short talks, lightning presentations, allocation of unassigned timeslots
  • 10:15-10:30 (to be decided during the day) (NONTECHNICAL theme)
  • 10:30-11:30 Refreshment Break; room will be left open (laptop security is individual responsibility). Room available for short-group breakouts.
  • 11:30-12:45 Social Web (FOAF, OpenID/OAuth, vCard etc), and discussion of possible Social Web XG (with Harry Halpin); break for lunch 15mins before 1pm 'eating shift' begins
  • 13:00-14:00 Lunch shift (room will probably be locked).
  • 14:00-15:30 Incubators Discussion, 90mins (presentations, roundtable)

Discussion of past, current and planned W3C Incubator Groups; also related initiatives (eg. Heart Project at Apache; Open Web Foundation etc). Will have a mini-break midway through.

  • 15:30-16:00 Refreshments Break; room open for breakouts
  • 16:00-18:00 Lightning Presentations (5mins each) including breakout feedback. Mixed technical and non-technical talks (but please try to be accessible!)

Tuesday Oct 21st:

9:00-10:00 Invited talk and round-table discussion: Svante Schubert, (Sun Microsystems), ODF, RDF metadata in OpenOffice.org 3.

10:30-11:30 Refreshment Break. Room open for breakout discussions.

11:30-13:00

Notes

At some point (4pm) tuesday we will have a joint-session with Healthcare and Life Sciences IG - see mail thread and HCLSIG agenda. The idea is to study "lessons learned" from HCLS that might apply to other domain-oriented SW efforts. Timing is not fixed yet (nor are rooms 100% confirmed).
